Fife Shopping and Support Services (Registered Charity)
Information and background
Fife Shopping & Support Services (FS&SS) provides frail and housebound elderly people and disabled adults across Fife with support to maintain independence within their own homes.
FS&SS was formed following the closure of Fife Council’s shopping delivery service in September 2010.
The staff that were made redundant at this point approached Fife Council for support to help them continue the service as a social enterprise, however this was rejected by the local authority. Undeterred, the staff recognised that the service was still vital to hundreds of people across Fife and so they went ahead and created a limited company in August 2010 to continue the service (14 of the original 25 staff joined the company, taking pay cuts to improve the viability of the service).
Recognition of the transformation of the service was gained in 2012 when Service Manager, Lynne Ogilvie, was named Fife Social Entrepreneur of the Year – voted for by our social enterprises in the Kingdom. In addition, several funding awards have been generated that led to the purchase of vehicles – one being the first wind powered vehicle in the UK which is used for shopping services in the morning and schools educational projects in the afternoon.
FS&SS currently assist over 300 service users on a weekly basis with shopping, pension collections, housework, gardening maintenance and befriending/companion service and are developing new supports as client’s make individual requests.
In December 2012, FS&SS joined a partnership of local organisations with the aim of reducing health inequalities in Fife.
September 2014 saw the opening of FS&SS charity shop on Kirkcaldy high Street Fife. The charity shop acts not only as a pathway to generating additional income into the mainstream service but also supports young people into employment by offering training opportunities in a retail setting.
